Scenarios

  1. The Motorist - Over the weekend, a motorist was in a car accident. The motorist's thigh was cut very badly. After several weeks in the hospital, the motorist was free to go. The motorist could move the leg, but lost sensation in the leg. Now, when the motorist steps on something or brushes up against an object, she can't feel it. After about two months, the motorist started to feel some sensation in the leg again.

  2. The Skydiver - Last weekend, a skydiver almost lost his life when his parachute failed to open fully. He landed on his tailbone. At the hospital, he reported that he could not move his legs or feel any part of his legs. The doctor discovered that two of his lower spinal vertebrae were broken. doctors surgically implanted a metal rod to keep his back from bending, and he underwent extensive physical therapy. After this he could feel a needle prick on his left thigh, but he still could not move his legs.

  3. The Farmer - The farmer was driving his truck through the filed when he hit a big ditch. The truck turned over and he flew out. He landed on his back, and there was a rock on the ground which ended up hitting his spine at about waist level. He reported not being able to feel his legs but he could move them. doctors determined that he crushed one side of his spinal vertebrae. After his stay at the hospital, he reported that he could feel nothing below the waist but he could move his legs.

  4. The Professional - The professional was born with Spina Bifida, a genetic disorder that causes the spinal cord to be underdeveloped. She must use a wheelchair, but she has control over her bladder and bowels, and all functions above the waist. She uses a wheelchair because she only has limited feeling and muscle control over her legs, due to her underdeveloped spinal cord.

  5. The Quarterback - During the big game, the quarterback threw a long pass. Right afterword, he was sacked by three defenders. His arm was twisted around, and he heard crunching noises. Doctors noted that he could feel his hand but he could not move his hand. After one week, he was released from the hospital and still could not move his hand.
